Back to Work

Back to Work program encourages Victorian employers to hire the long term unemployed, youth (15-25), out-of-trade apprentices and retrenched workers.

Payment amounts

  • $2000 for employing people looking for work for 12 months or more in a full-time job
  • $1500 for employing people looking for work for 12 months or more in a part-time job
  • $1000 for employing young people aged 15-25 (inclusive) looking for work for three months or more, retrenched workers or out-of-trade apprentices in a full-time job
  • $750 for employing young people aged 15-25 (inclusive) looking for work for three months or more, retrenched workers or out-of-trade apprentices in a part-time job

Three key criteria must be satisfied before you are entitled to a BTW payment:

  • Am I an eligible employer?
  • Have I employed an eligible employee?
  • Is that employee employed in an eligible job?

Eligible employers

All employers are eligible, except for:

  • An employer with a poor workplace safety record, or
  • Government bodies 

Eligible employees

An eligible employee is a person employed by you who is:

  • Looking for work for 12 months or more,
  • A young person looking for work for three months or more,
  • A retrenched worker, or
  • An out-of-trade apprentice

Eligible jobs

  • An eligible job is a full or part-time ongoing Victorian job offered by you as long as it does not exceed the salary limit.
