Lillian’s learning while she’s earning

Single mother of two, Lillian Cooktown, moved to Brisbane three years ago. She completed a Certificate III in Community Services before turning to Australian Training Works (ATW) and Sarina Russo Apprenticeships (SRA) to look at entering another traineeship and gaining an additional skill base.

ATW have partnered with SRA for multiple years and have worked together to get First Nations people into training and employment. Lillian first met Sarina Russo Group’s Indigenous Services Manager Violet Singh with a group of around seven other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ladies looking to start a traineeship. Violet worked with the group to understand the sign-up process, what was expected of them in their traineeship and to provide additional support to the women.

ATW have an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Traineeship Program which provides First Nations’ people with practical on-the-job experience while gaining a qualification, an increase in the chance to secure employment, learn from experts in the field and entry into the Queensland Public Service with opportunities to grow. This program coupled with SRA’s mentoring program which provides support on and off the job with personal and professional advice for the duration of the traineeship, incentives to support the completion of your study, online employability and life skills courses and confidential psychology services for further support gave Lillian the best shot at working her way through another traineeship and end up in gainful employment that she enjoys.

Lillian chose to complete a Certificate III in Business with the Department of Communities, Housing and Digital Economy. She commenced her traineeship in June 2022 and is currently settling into her twelve-month traineeship. She’s gaining more confidence in her new role and is looking forward to earning while she learns and building even stronger skills for her future.
