Madelayne Burgess, a Year 11 student at Merici College, defied conventions by pursuing a career in a male-dominated trade. Enroled in the Australian School-based Apprenticeship (ASbA) Certificate III in Electrotechnology, Madelayne exemplifies the potential for success when talent meets opportunity.

From a young age, Madelayne harboured a keen interest in working with her hands and always knew that a trade was the path she wanted to tread. Her conviction was solidified during a transformative work experience opportunity where she had the chance to immerse herself in the daily rigors of the trade. The experience only fueled her passion, and Madelayne knew that this was the career she was destined for.

Taking a bold step forward, Madelayne decided to pursue a trial with Brownies Elecrical and to her delight, not only did she excel during the trial, but the team was so impressed with her skills and dedication that they insisted on hiring her as an apprentice. This marked a groundbreaking moment, breaking down gender barriers in an industry where women are traditionally underrepresented.

A notable aspect of Madelayne's journey is her love for mathematics. Her proficiency in mathematics not only enhanced her problem-solving skills on the job but also exemplified the importance of diverse skill sets in any profession.

Madelayne's story highlights the role played by apprenticeship programs in empowering individuals to pursue their dreams. And through providers, like Sarina Russo Apprenticeships, who are committed to fostering inclusivity and equal opportunities, aspiring individuals like Madelayne are given the right support to pursue their chosen paths.
